Climate Catastrophes as a Sum of Known Risks

چکیده
Abstract An ever-increasing body of research has warned for decades about the impacts climate change on agriculture, health, flooding, economy, among many others and provided information when where these could be larger. Are societies prepared expected ‘white-swans’, particularly in context a high degree interconnectedness Nature society? I borrow from development Covid-19 pandemic to illustrate this view. Influenza pandemics have been foreseen before, but characteristics virus socioeconomic links made it into global crisis that had become 2020.

Climate catastrophes
Climate catastrophes, which many times occurred in the geological past, caused the extinction of large or small populations of animals and plants. Changes in the terrestrial and marine biota caused by the catastrophic climate changes undoubtedly resulted in considerable fluctuations in global carbon cycle and atmospheric gas composition. Primarily, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas conten...
متن کاملInsuring future climate catastrophes
The combined influences of a change in climate patterns and the increased concentration of property and economic activity in hazard-prone areas has the potential of restricting the availability and affordability of insurance. This paper evaluates the premiums that private insurers are likely to charge and their ability to cover residential losses against hurricane risk in Florida as a function ...
متن کاملClimate Change Catastrophes
Most studies that compare price and quantity controls for greenhouse gas emissions under uncertainty find that price mechanisms perform substantially better. In these studies, the benefits from reducing emissions are proportional to the level of reductions, and such linear benefits strongly favor price policies (Weitzman 1974). Catastrophic damages, however, challenge that intuition as conseque...
متن کاملClimate treaties and approaching catastrophes
If the threshold that triggers climate catastrophe is known with certainty, and the benefits of avoiding catastrophe are high relative to the costs, treaties can easily coordinate countries’ behavior so as to avoid the threshold. Where the net benefits of avoiding catastrophe are lower, treaties typically fail to help countries cooperate to avoid catastrophe, sustaining only modest cuts in emis...
متن کاملThe Most Extreme Risks: Global Catastrophes
The most extreme risk are those that threaten the entirety of human civilization, known as global catastrophic risks. The very extreme nature of global catastrophes makes them both challenging to analyze and important to address. They are challenging to analyze because they are largely unprecedented and because they involve the entire global human system. They are important to address because t...
